Source For Skills Assessment/testing

Posted by tom.feary on 125 Points
Hi. I'm looking for a good source for skills assessment and testing for marketing folks. Prime purposes are pre-employment testing and personal development planning.

Specifically I'm looking for some assessment on social media and content marketing.

Thanks for the help!

The best would probably be to review a candidate's portfolio and ask what the objective was in each instance, what thought process he/she used, etc. I doubt there is a reliable assessment instrument for this yet. Social media and content marketing are constantly (and rapidly) evolving. What would have been in the testing instrument last month is probably out of date this month.

If you have a candidate that you're potentially interested in, then pay them to complete a small (few hour) project, and then have them present it to you. You'll learn a lot about them more than any test can reveal.

If I were personally tasked with coming up with such a test, I would look online for some comprehensive social media glossaries, separate the terms from the definitions, and ask potential employees to match them up. I don't think this exercise would be sufficient to identify top candidates, but it could be a way to get this task done and to generate some focused conversations between corporate stakeholders and prospective employees.
