Multiple Domain Advice - Rankings

Posted by lostfound18 on 500 Points
In our competitive industry, a number of partners have multiple domains with keywords in their domains. They are ranking higher than us - even though our site has been around quite some time and has rich, original content.

I need to advise as the region wants to buy some additional domains with the keywords in them to help get ahead of the competition. Due to duplicate content, I can't see how this would help. Is there anything else I could do - such as buy another domain name that is keyword rich and create a few pages of new original content and then link to my site?

I'm not an SEO expert and my concern is that the region is jumping overboard because they are concerned with rankings and not thinking through long term planning.

Thanks

What quality backlinks do you have to your website? That's ultimately what'll help your ranking - not simply keywords or domain age.

SEO and search engine ranking may not be as relevant, or as appropriate as a goal, as it once was. Be sure you want to expend the time, energy and money chasing it.

There are a few reasons for the shift in emphasis: First, Google recognizes that its revenue is almost entirely a function of advertising -- Google Adwords, to be specific. It makes nothing from natural search. As a result, they have devoted most of the search results screen (i.e., above the fold) to paid search results, not to natural search. Most searchers will probably never even see the top natural search results.

Second, the search ranking algorithm is more focused on the actual content, the content of the landing page/website, and backlinks, than it is on the old SEO "tricks." Google wants searchers to have a great experience and find what they are seeking, so they reward sites that deliver -- not those which load up on keywords or use other ploys to [try to] influence ranking. (Google has become very smart about this.)

You might want to re-direct your efforts to an Adwords campaign, especially given that your competitors are still relying primarily on SEO. That could be a great way to leapfrog them in the marketing area.
