Web 2.0: Destination Unknown

Published on September 3, 2007

Web sites, blogs, podcasts, wikis, social networks. If you're feeling a little lost in the brave new world of Web 2.0, join the club. Everyone knows it needs to be a central element in their marketing mix, but the fact remains we're all aiming at a moving target.

"I've moved through phases from passionate advocate to bored pragmatist and back again," writes Tom Murphy at his blog Murphy’s Law. "But the big question that no one has the answer to is: Where is all this stuff going?"

We can make an educated guess about the near future, the most logical being a continual integration of new and traditional media. Beyond that, it's difficult to anticipate how MySpace, Facebook, YouTube and new social networking sites will influence the way we use the Internet.

Who could have guessed in the last presidential campaign that candidates in the 2008 race would answer videotaped questions from YouTube users in CNN-sponsored debates? Or that viewers of MTV’s Real World would stream audition tapes and vote on a cast for the reality series?

Writes Murphy, "We should embrace change—I do—but that doesn't mean it's not puzzling and confusing."
