"Even seasoned email marketers who follow best practices for email list development, relevancy, and deliverability still lose about one-third of their subscribers annually due to bounces, unsubscribes, and spam complaints," writes Ross Kramer at the HubSpot blog. "And the attrition rates are even higher for less vigilant marketers."

But here's a remedy you may not have considered: Sweepstakes, Kramer notes, are an excellent way to keep email lists growing. He offers a few tips on how to make a competition work for you:

Make the contest short and sweet. You want people to register—and they're less likely to feel any urgency if a contest lasts for weeks. Encourage immediate action with a shorter timeframe.

Give a prize that attracts strong prospects. You might get more entrants with a cash prize, notes Kramer, but you'll lure the right kind of entrant when you award your own product or service.
