How to Build Your Email List With a Sweepstakes Competition

September 21, 2011

"Even seasoned email marketers who follow best practices for email list development, relevancy, and deliverability still lose about one-third of their subscribers annually due to bounces, unsubscribes, and spam complaints," writes Ross Kramer at the HubSpot blog. "And the attrition rates are even higher for less vigilant marketers."

But here's a remedy you may not have considered: Sweepstakes, Kramer notes, are an excellent way to keep email lists growing. He offers a few tips on how to make a competition work for you:

Make the contest short and sweet. You want people to register—and they're less likely to feel any urgency if a contest lasts for weeks. Encourage immediate action with a shorter timeframe.

Give a prize that attracts strong prospects. You might get more entrants with a cash prize, notes Kramer, but you'll lure the right kind of entrant when you award your own product or service.

Sweepstakes are also a powerful tool for social/viral pickup which can yield a large volume or new Fans, Likes and Folowers. My company's web platform was recently used by a 4 store retailer to run a month of sweeps which generated 113K email opt-ins and 28K social media shares including over 1,500 new Facebook Fans.

For B2B - we've used sweeps ourselves at tradeshows/events to convert booth visitors to leads. We posted the sweepstake entries into or email tool for real-time followup with more info. which yielded a 54% open rate!
