Though Google continued to dominate search in June, accounting for 71.65% of all US searches conducted in the four weeks ended June 26, Bing's share of searches reached 9.85%, up 7% from May, according to Experian Hitwise data.

Yahoo received 14.37% of searches in June. Ask received 2.19%, up 2% from May.

The remaining 70 search engines in the Hitwise Search Engine Analysis Tool accounted for 1.94% of US searches.

Search Traffic to Key US Industries

Search engines remain the primary way Internet users navigate to key industry categories.

Double-digit increases were recorded from May to June in the share of traffic going directly from search engines to the Automotive, Business and Finance, Entertainment, News and Media, Shopping, and Social Networking categories.

Among the top search engines, Google sent the most visits to Automotive, Health, Shopping, and Travel categories, while Yahoo Search registered monthly gains in the Automotive and Shopping categories: 8% and 10%, respectively.

Bing's share registered triple-digit growth among three categories: Automotive, Shopping, and Travel.

Longer Search Queries Up Slightly

The number of longer search queries—those averaging searches of five or more words—increased 1% from May. The number of shorter search queries—those averaging one to four words in length—was unchanged. The number of four- to seven-word searches all increased 1% in June.


Searches of two word comprised the plurality of searches, or 23.42% of all queries; that level was also unchanged from May. The number of one-word and three-word queries each fell 1%.
