Excluding Vendors From Registering For Event?

Posted by Anonymous on 25 Points
we'll be putting on an industry event and do not want software vendors to attend unless they are a partner.

we will have a registration page with credit card processing.

events pros, is there a standard practice for achieving this goal?

do we simply add copy to the registration page to this effect, and state that if they are uncertain to follow up with our partner manager?

You could just refuse to let them in, print terms and conditions precluding such behaviour and be prepared to turf them out.

Or, if you have disruptive competitors who are out to wreck an event which you are staging and which other attendee’s have either paid to attend or given of their time to be there, answer their first disruptive question with a statement that they are repeating previously discussed positions, peddling misinformation and that their actions are unwelcome in this particular forum. Tell them that you are not prepared for them to hijack your event for the sake of their own agenda and that their actions verge on assault.

Ask the other delegates if they wish to devote their valuable time to listening to a competitor trying to hijack the event and further ask them if they wish the disruptive elements to remain at the meeting. If your genuine delegates are not into bear baiting for the sake of entertainment, they will vote them out in order to get some personal value from your event for themselves.

There’s a risk to this as it is possible that the other attendees could be perverse and just want to see a good punch up. If that were to happen, you would have to adjourn the meeting, letting the others know that you find it intolerable to try to carry on under constant and unreasonable bullying. The last time this happened to me, in 1996, I so stirred up the delegates that they nearly lynched the disruptive elements.

Or you can get my son to come along as a security guy, preferably wearing his karate outfit + black belt. That tends to keep order!
