I Don't Know How To Get Started/selling Food Item

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I have a very old (my great-great grandmother's) family recipe for pimento cheese that is unlike any recipe that I have ever seen anywhere for pimento cheese. Everyone that tries it loves it and tells me that I need to sell it. My dilemma is that I have no idea where to start and what my best chances are to market it. It is so much better than what the chain groceries sell that it is unbelievable! I live in Atlanta and need some advice. Is there a way to sell the recipe to another company that would produce and market it? I have no extra money right now (I'm a Realtor that is suffering in this economy) to start up my own kitchen etc...
Any help is greatly appreciated!

While I absolutely agree with the above comment that you cannot take this product to market without a minimum amount of production effort, marketing, packaging, and proven marketability - I also understand your frustration in not having the funds available to launch this product.

In your case, I would start small - begin making larger quantities of the cheese that you can sell to family and friends. Many companies (ie: Larabar, Burt's Bees, etc.) started the same way and were able to build enough capital to launch products by first selling to those they know. Host wine and cheese parties, setup profiles on social networking sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn - use them to promote your parties, share recipes, provide opportunities for people to order from you. Try contacting caterers in your area to see if any have an interest in using your products, and even trade out with them to provide free product if they will display/promote your name.

Sites like this one are great ways to gather ideas, and you are already off to a good start in developing a marketing plan. Once you have enough in the bank from selling directly to consumers, hire a good marketing agency or design firm to help you develop packaging and sell your brand to the distributors and retail outlets.

    good luck!

Farmers markets are the place to start. Often people who say YOU should do someone would never do it themselves NOR pay you for it. You have to test that market and you CAN do that from your own kitchen.

I have a customer who did that for giardinaire (sp?). AFter you're selling for a while, contact me and I'll help you find someone who can make and package it for you down there.
