Getting A Career In Business Development

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I am hoping to gain some insite on how to move from a marketing communications manager position to a business development role.

I have recently obtained my MBA and am currently the Internet Marketing Manager for a Fortune 500 company. I have about five years of Internet and Marketing experience.

It seems there are a variety of Business Development definitions out there, but I was hoping to focus on strategy, acquisition, negotiating deals...

Thank you for your time.

There are similarities between MarCom and BizDev, such as that both positions require negotiation skills. Play these up as best as possible.

One of the challenges (IMHO) is that in MarCom, much of the knowledge needed to be successful is focused on the process of creating the marketing pieces, but not as much on the customer and products. In BizDev, much of the knowledge you will need is on the customer, their needs, and how the the product (in current form and as it is strategically planned to be) meet their needs.

I suggest that you take every opportunity you can get to learn about the customer and the products, and then start trying to demonstrate that you have knowledge in this area.

    Mateosquared,

Here is a post I did for another gentleman looking to make a change in jobs. It's the principles that you should apply to making a transition from any job from my experience. You can check it out right here https://www.marketingprofs.com/ea/qst_question.asp?qstID=2074#13613

What ever you do you need to learn as much as you can about the position and have the expectation that you will get there. I don't know if you ever heard the joke about the Chicken and the Pig. In the analysis of the ham and egg breakfast ... the chicken is involved. whereas. the pig is committed. Just remember to be committed because committed people succeed in their efforts to become business development managers. Is there anything else I can do for you?

Your Servant, Deremiah, *CPE (Customer Passion Evangelist)
