Future Technology

Over a two centuries the technoligical development has ruled the world. In this technological era change is suttle and is unexpected. But, we all know that it doesn't happen in a days time only thing we don't give proper attention to these changes that happen. In the 19th century it was manufacturing companies that ruled the world which was later taken over by oil industry after which today we are the information era where in computers are ruling the world. If changes is what is constant and if every change has evolved over a period of time, Can you please predict what technology or sector or industry is going to be tomorrows ruler?

RFID technology will replace barcodes within the next five years and will also open up a whole new set of mobile applications in retail, distribution, manafacturing and supply chain. This is just one example of developments in mobile technology. I suspect mobile in general, with higher bandwidth and always-on-connection (3 G), will have a profound impact on the way we use technology in business and our personal life. Your office will be where you are, rather than a building, etc. The idea of calling a building, to talk to a person, will be as unusual as somebody going to a room in their home to listen to the radio, as was the case before we had personal walkmans, radios, MP3 players, etc.

I will put away my crystal ball for now!

You might want to check these earlier forum questions about marketing innovations and trends that should happen soon.

They don't address technology exclusively, but I thing you'll find them interesting!

It will defiantly be transportation. Cell phones, TV, and the Internet are great, but the bottom line to lifestyle improvement is transportation. Transportation is the master key to success – and basic survival. Without transportation of people or goods, life is impossible. The automobile and airplane were the last improvements in transportation. Transportation is about to undergo another quantum leap like communication recently has. Hi Priya
Manufacturing and Oil cannot strictly be termed as technologies.
If I were to put my money on just one technology that will drive the future, I would put it on WIRELESS.
A large part of what we do and how we do it will be driven by wireless.
According to ITU, it was in 2003 that the total number of wireless phones exceeded fixed line phones and in India (that's where I live) this will happen in Oct 2004. And this is just one part of the story.
According to Nicholas Negroponte of Media Labs, everything that went through wires will go through ether and vice-versa. Its called the Negroponte switch. It has happened for TV and looks like its underway for telephony.
Technologies like RFID, Wi-Fi and stuff add context to the information. They will help reconnect geography to the Internet or any other network and that's why WIRELESS is the technology, I would put my stake on.
Cheers

Not my idea. The above examples are all uses of the underlying technological breakthrough: cheap communication and computing power.

The real next wave with a totally new technological base will be life sciences (bio technology being one instantiation of it). The fact that we can now direct life's molecules to do what we want, is a new paradigm. And that has been started somewhere in the 50's.

As with most new technological advances, we will only be able after the fact, to point the next major paradigm. But that is another trait of paradigm shifts. They are constantly happening, but only the ones that get a major endorsement, will be the ones that get noticed.

I agree with mohitchhabra and pkemper. Wireless and Life science are going to be the important industries where things will happen. In Wireless area Peer to peer networking and seemless roaming is an area which is getting much recognition and in future these would be more important.
In life science research in stem cells has been a big break through and I think the technology of making perfect people will go big.
