Ways To Compete & Build Revenue - Airline Industry

Mr. X took over as president of an Airline in 1995. The Airline was losing sales for some previous years. Management had face this problem by cutting down cost. Mr. X saw saw that as a wrong solution. the Airline needed to find new ways to compete and build revenue.
The Airline had been pursuing all travelers no focus (direction) & no superior advantages to offer anyone. infact it was seen as one of the least puntual areas of operations. if you were Mr. X what will you do?

I agree with WMMA on this one. but would also like to know what was Mr. X doing for so long(9 years is a big time)?
I can understand when people do not do anything when they do not know what the problems are but since Mr. X or you know some of the problems try solving them. If you cannot offer quality offer low price.

Have you visited the Important Guidelines page? Please go there and read ITEM FIVE. It might help you understand how to reframe your question, which you can do by adding your own comments to this thread.

We can help you with your case study after you tell us what YOU think Mr. X ought to do.

Shelly makes a very valid offer. And a great deal of our experts would love to chime in and offer you some very excellent solutions to your airline case study. I'll give you this advice and if you respond with somethings you think are pertinent I'm positive everyone else will join in.

HISTORY'S FULL OF ANSWER'S...
Here's one key you can always use to solving your homework problems. Research history to see if there were any other people who have already "been there and done that". For example I believe you can find a boat load full of ideas by reviewing the Southwest Airlines story. Now I've given you a little bit of something what do you think?

If I were Mr.X I would probably narrow down my focus. I would make it a low cost airline, reposition it and try and make money on the volumes. Cutting unrequired costs is also of no harm. Advertise the airline as one which is low on cost but still high on quality of service. Something like "X Airways... we are high on you". Also study the Southwest Airlines Case for more inputs.

I would take a look at Jet Blue. They have emphasized quality and hit areas of price inelasticity (flights people wanted to be pampered on and didn't care what it cost) and other smart marketing programs.

This type of work starts with a very good market segmentation program to determine market opportunities. A good straw man can be done via using only certain flights for different parts of the program. Airlines seem to never listen to customers so even having a method for feedback would impress many.
