Not everyone is cut out to work as an ex pat. If it fits with your personality, go for it. You will gain tremendous experience. BUT....don't remain isolated within the country you're located. You can do a lot to change perceptions by learning the new culture.

It's possible to think "Wow unemployment is at 5%!" Or "Wow 95% of people are working!" You decide how to look at it. Many people are secure in their jobs, but concerned about their neighbors' jobs. That makes no sense if you think it through logically.

As far as being unemployed it really has to do with what your long term goal is. If you haven't found your path yet, you can try anything to bring in income and that is commendable. If you HAVE found your path and are just diverted, in addition to finding something to pay your bills, look for side jobs or volunteer your services at a non-profit organization. You can make many contacts that way and you'll be giving back to your community.
