what do you do when you can't get past the office manger to get the client to consider you for a job? The manager seems angry when we call and has been rude. We are just trying to get a job.

Depending on the type of business, the office manager is hired by the person you are trying to reach to do exactly what they are doing to you...screen and direct the traffic.

I know it sounds a bit unfortunate, but true. Take physicians for example, you can rarely call up a doctor's office and ask to speak directly to the doctor to set up an interview with any smidge of success. Same goes for trying the same on any other hig profile exec.

You know THEY make the decisions anyway so why not just talk to them? I know all too well. Be aware most "clients" ,as you have coined them, appreciate and support their office managers 100%, so if you go around them, they are likely to get an instant negative 1st impression.

If you can tell me more about this client, perhaps I can suggest some ways to "sneak" in the back door.

    Good question! I can relate!

I would agree with all of the above comments and I would also suggest you to be patient and persevere.
ANother thing I would reccomend you to do is to read Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind by Al Ries and Jack Trout. Cpater 20 talks about positioning yourself and your career. This book has pretty good tips that will not only help you right now, but for it will contribute enourmously to succeed.

Tell them they should take down their manger, it's almost the end of February for gosh sakes, Christmas was over more then a month ago.

Maybe they're leaving it up because of Mel Gibson's new movie "The passion of Christ".

Anyway, when they take down the manger, you should be able to see the client. It must be a pretty big manger if you can get past it. Check with your local building inspector. Maybe they need a permit to have something that big.

With so many people competing for the same job opportunities, you need to differentiate yourself and stand out from the pack by using what makes you unique.

Try sending something out of the ordinary (instead of a cover letter and resume) that is consistent with your promise of value. You might send a Fedex box with something that conveys your candidature in a more compelling way...or send a CV with nothing more than a web site address and use the web site to communicate the value you will bring to the organization.

    Best of luck to you.

I guess I'd like to know a bit more about what is going on here. Are you talking about one single office manager, and that you have multiple people calling that person? If so, I'm not suprised they "seem rude"...

... or are you saying that in general, office managers are rude to you when anyone from your staff calls? If most people that your company calls react negatively, that is probably your fault, not theirs. You probably need to soften your approach.

There are many excellent books on basic telemarketing skills - my suggestion would be that you buy one, and read it cover to cover.
