Well, in a nut shell:

Marketing: Creates the Message.

Sales: Delivers it.

I would just have to add that you should keep in mind that Marketing involves more than Sales. When you are doing marketing, you are not only selling but you are also improving the image of a product, the image of the company, communicating customers about the benefits and influencing in the buying behavior. You are also monitoring competition, the environment, etc. And as Allen Weiss said, sales represent tactics used to get the products out to customers.

I once read that the oldest coin ever found is inscribed, "Find a need, and fill it". One way to look at it is that Marketing finds a prospect who has a need, and Sales delivers a product or service to fill that need.
