Take A Second Look -- Remodeling Website

Posted by SRyan ;] on 1200 Points
Hello, everyone! It's my turn in the barrel.

About two months ago, many of you gave me great feedback on my unusual approach to an "upside down" home page. I incorporated some of your ideas there.

The site is 95% complete (no site is EVER complete!) and ready for you to take another look.

www.bayoucityservices.com

Go ahead, get tough on me -- I can take it! Many thanks...

I like the masthead (is that the right word?) at the bottom - but I think you need some photos on the front page... I like the idea of keeping the project photos on the later pages, but maybe some people photos. I think the top section of the web site would benefit, say, from a picture of a lady in her kitchen scratching her chin, looking at a room in her house, wondering if it might be improved.

    Hi shelly

    Contact page cant be found

black background maybe a bit lighter, possibly light grey.

have you viewed you page in a text browser?

Also you might want to try viewing your page in black and white.

You need Alt text on the images even if they are spacers!! this will improve viewing the site in a text browser, eg Linux, or a palm pilot, cell phone.

I agree with telemoxie about the images.

There is No doctype so i cant check to see if the html is valid or not.

The pop-up photos are to big for the box which means I have to re-size the window, or scroll.

Also you only need to add Alt text to all images to get level one compliance on Bobby Watchfire. https://bobby.watchfire.com/bobby/html/en/index.jsp

Other than these things it is very nice. You haven’t given me much to complain about

    Good stuff so far!

Carl, thanks for pointing out the contact page error. It's fixed now. (I've had files disappear from the server. Must be termites.)

I know I can be slow on the uptake, but did anyone else almost miss the fact that those red phrases are clickable links?

I looked at this page four times before I thought to try that. Does anyone think that underlining is still necessary to tell people that text is a hyperlink?

If possible, I think it'd be great to have some before and after photos right on the home page; the text could wrap around them. Also, testimonials (at least one) on the home page might be nice, too.

On the contact page, I'd consider adding a field for a phone number. You can always make it optional, but if someone enters their email address wrong, you could have the phone number to fall back on. Also, you might consider validating the data entry; I was able to submit a completely blank form.

I'm curious as to why the interior pages use the white text with a black background. And lastly, is there a legal requirement that you have to display the various license numbers on the Web site, or is that just a Maryland thing?

All in all, it's an informative site with good copy, and the interior pages do a nice job of showing what the company can do. And in the renovation business, that's 95% of the battle!

    Good luck!

Paul, you're the first (that I know of) who missed the links. I have a weird preference for suppressing the underscores when there are a lot of links in one space -- particularly in something like a navigation bar. I could go either way on this home page, though.

I also have mixed feelings about the white text on black. That design decision was made when it looked like there would be a lot more photos than written content.

Kate, I know what you mean about demonstrating instead of describing. I've done that four or five times for other members here! Don't spend too much time on it, though... this isn't a big client or a high-traffic site.

Thanks, friends, and keep it coming!

Ya'll are telling me all the things I need to hear -- much appreciated!

Dave, I'm a gray-haired usability evangelist, and I agree with following standards (the sensible ones) 99% of the time. There are a few reasons I thought this site should/could have some unexpected elements... the top reason being that it "fits" the personality of the business and its owner.

All of his clients are referrals, and there's a waiting list, usually for 3-6 months. He's never had a prospective customer say No.

Why have a website at all? It's really just a digital portfolio that will help his existing customer base tell friends about the company, and it's perfectly fine that the likelihood of getting new business from wandering netizens is rather miniscule.

Now don't get the wrong impression, everyone, that I'm using these as excuses for not accepting feedback. No sirree!! I always put your ideas to work. But I thought I should explain why this site has an unconventional front door...

The logo is great and somewhat diluted by to many miss-aligned small ones. How about adding talons holding nails, when you mouse over the logo?

All said - a great site.

Okay, the message is loud and clear about the links, so I've updated the style and underscored them. If I'm super duper diligent, I might get some more changes in place before I close this question. (For a point of reference for latecomers, here is the version of the home page posted at the beginning of this thread.)

When I first tested this concept two months ago, people were rather polarized in their opinions about it. Ya'll still are, but originally it seemed there were more people who liked the narrative focus of the home page. (Try the "great feedback" link above if you want to see the early comments.)

Also, during the first test the page did achieve one interesting result -- some people forwarded a link to it to their friends because they wanted them to see it. Viral marketing? A fringe benefit, at the very least.

The trick now may be to incorporate some of the more traditional elements, make it less splashified, etc., while keeping its uniqueness intact.  ;]

    Shelley,

I love your new and improved website. Looks great! I really enjoy the scripted home page different and it works. The pictures in the back are great.

What I really LOVE also is the comparison...the Before and After pictures are worth their weight in gold expecially in the remodeling section. All your commentary is very fitting for all the images posted.

There is not really much to say and what I have to share is just a matter of taste. I think you might want to add a pinch more of white space at the bottom of the home page where the header butts up against your wonderful scripted text. I told you it would be a small comment.

I also agree with Michele...I would not dare consider putting white text on a black background. Your color scheme already works very well. Well Shelley (in my best impression of James Cagney) "It looks like you've made another Killer website better".

The only thing that I don't like about it is that you and I have not begun to talk about the great job you are going to do for me in January. Is there anything else I can do for you Shelley?

Your Servant, Deremiah, *CPE, (Customer Passion Evangelist)

    PS
capturing email addresses might be something you may want to consider for the future tracking of the site. Love the yellow car. I'm sure I'll never see it up this way.

Thanks for the input, Sharon -- I especially like the "I'm calling you" idea for a link. And the small icons are probably coming off the home page soon...

All righty then... I'm closing now. When the "final" revisions are in place, I'll try to remember to come back and post the link here, just in case any of you are interested in seeing how I mix, stir, and frappe your ideas into the site.

Big thanks for all of the input!!
