Best Practices For Multiple Urls

Posted by lmarscha on 125 Points
My website is under my company name which is an acronym of my name. I recently purchased several URLs that I currently point to my website. The additional URLs are similar to or more like the search terms people would use. I'm in travel - the new URL terms are generic, eg.cruisespecialist. Are there best practices on how to use multiple URLS? My business is new and I need visibility. So I'm wondering if I should post content on multiple URLs or how to best use the new URLs to push to my main website.

Sub question would be on social media - best to stay with one FB page or multiple FB pages with the new URL names but push people to my main website?

always direct viewers to a single destination, whether it's your site or social media. on SM especially, you don't want to scatter the engagement and make your presence more fragmented than it already is. work with someone to optimize the SEO of your true site as well as your auxiliary URLs so they pointed in the right place. from your true site, you compel your customers to go to the proper social pages.

aside: if you're worried about losing customers because a competitor uses URLs/names that are similar to yours, that tells me that you need to focus on branding a bit more insomuch that you'd want a customer to instantly recognize when they aren't engaging your company.

Perfect. Thank you. SEO is the next thing I need to conquer. My company name shows up under google, but I'm nowhere to be found when one searches for the travel type. Thanks again.

Multiple URLs are a good tactic if you want the web address to be catchy or more memorable. If you are using them to drive traffic you would be better off focusing on SEO. Avoid the mistakes of keyword jamming and link farming and just concentrate on clear concise content that states what you do and how you benefit your clients. The search algorithms are designed to index primarily on the content (some other things matter too) so make that your priority.

Social media is not always a good fit for business, however in your case if you have the energy and resources to apply to it, it may serve you well. Try to avoid simply duplicating content across all media if possible.

    Best of luck!
