We are opening our new dining hall and would like to use a food related idea instead of a ribbon for the ribbon cutting ceremony.

    Smash a watermelon, but first...
Put a crème pie on top of it, then...
Right before you smash it, place a cherry on top.
    People will talk about that.

Great idea but there will be concern about wasting food items. Many thanks anyway

let's start with this thought: a ribbon *eating* ceremony

Skip the concept of a ribbon cutting (since it's simply a staid photo opportunity for the local paper), and instead consider an event: feeding the hungry/homeless, free dinners for couples married over 50 years, etc.
