Hiring An Independent Sales Representative

Posted by jctx on 125 Points
I have a small start-up business and want to hire an Independent Sales Rep to sell my product to retailers. (specifically retailers that carry home decor products for children & teens).

Here are some questions that I have:

1. What's the best approach to hire a sales rep to sell my (single) product to retail stores?

2. What's the industry standard on pay/commission for a sales rep? Do they strictly work on commission?

3. Are there some leading companies out there that can help you connect with independent sales reps? Especially sales reps experienced within specific industries and/or retailers?

I am assuming you are in the United States. My remarks may not apply elsewhere.

Finding a good sales rep who will take on your product is not going to be easy. It may not even be possible. The really good sales reps already have products that are providing a decent living for them, so even if they took yours it would not be their highest priority. And chances are they couldn't earn enough in commissions to make you an important "core" product in their line right off the bat.

Furthermore, they would have to have a reason to believe the product would sell to the end user. They know that retailers don't really "sell" stuff. They are just distribution outlets. Consumers have to be seeking the product before it will sell. (Retailers won't accept a product that isn't supported by the manufacturer.) And products that don't sell don't generate re-orders, and then they are discontinued.

Do you have a marketing plan for your product? That really needs to come first. Have you sold the product through distribution anywhere -- even locally?

I know I haven't answered your specific questions. That's because finding a sales rep at this stage is probably not the right question/issue. You need a business plan and marketing strategy before you get to the details of your sales and distribution options. You may find that hiring a sales rep is the wrong strategy altogether.
