Are Social Links Important For A Marketer?

I'm wondering if someone among You Experts had aready use the social links between people to communicate. I mean as one point in a strategic structure of communication.
The word of mouth is a very important tool in communication. So can we communicate (free advertise) among groups that have the same "passion", think the same, like the same things...
How can we find those groups?
