How To Obtain Classical Brand Experience

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I’d like to gain classical brand experience at a larger CPG firm, but my challenge is determining what level I’m ready for. For ten years I was in sales as a co-owner of a food brokerage. Then I transitioned into
marketing – and I love it - at a young, dynamic, mid-sized food company with a one-man marketing department. The company is very strong in sales
and distribution but not marketing. I’ve grown the department (both staff and capabilities) and figured out a lot on my own. I’m the senior marketing manager and making a good salary, but I know that in order to continue to grow in this career, I need to obtain a more traditional marketing background. But at what level should I apply? Do I need to take 2 steps backwards first? My background is too senior for most of the entry marketing positions available at the large CPG companies, but I lack the “classical” background required by the higher level positions.

    Hi Cathy S:

You don't want to take 2 steps back. Are the "gaps" in your marketing background real or perceived?

It doesn't sound like it has been a handicap, has it been?

Have you thought about going to back to school, either for an undergrad or graduate degree?

This is frequently done by people who feel that their impending "gray hair" could leave them vulnerable to a youth movment, and it can be an effective way of developing a competitive advantage and, sometimes more importantly, your self confidence.

    I hope that helps.
