Posted by Anonymous on 500 Points
Hello there!
I am about to rent a beautiful cottage - house inspired space, to start up my restaurant - cafe - pub, located by the sea. I would love to have a NAME which combines food + seaside atmosphere? not necessarily reflect the cuisine i am serving. =)

Will need some lovely suggestions from you guys out there! Looking forward to hear them LOUD!

Thanks a Great Bunch!

Smiles,

WAIT! Don't sign the lease yet!

You need to first determine your positioning and develop an overall marketing strategy. Just having a nice physical location and some food doesn't guarantee success in the restaurant business. To paraphrase P.T. Barnum, "When people ain't coming to your restaurant, there's just no stopping them."

You need a marketing strategy and plan.

First, who is the prime target audience? What are they looking for in a restaurant? Are they "regulars" or "occasional diners"? Do they want drinks before dinner, wine with dinner, or just beer on tap? Are they into fancy dinners or casual meals -- soups and salad, sandwiches, etc.? Do they judge a restaurant on its desserts?

You need to really understand your market. Where do the frequent guests live? Do they have certain criteria for selecting a restaurant? How many restaurants are on their short list? How far will they drive to get to a favorite restaurant? Is the seaside location enough to get them in the door?

There are so many questions that need to be answered before you can get to naming. Start with a well-researched positioning statement, then let's come up with a name that communicates the positioning.

How about tying in to the latitude of the place,

we have a place here in Tasmania called T42o, which is the latitude and also can mean Tea for 2?

Hey, if you don't know what you're trying to communicate, then any of the names on the list will be OK.

How are you going to make the decision of which name to use? What criteria will you use to pick a winner?

If we know that, then we can focus on names that meet the criteria. If there are no criteria, just print out the list and throw darts.

Okay, café, pub, cottage by the sea. I don't know if the bar is connected or set aside so you can actually have a restaurant and local pub by different names in the same facility. Several restaurants in my area do that successfully. Lacking some detail on who you want to attract to the place, I may miss the mark totally, but here's a few thoughts, and maybe something will work for you or inspire a better name:

    La Mer

    Ocean Grill

    Oceanside Grill and Bar

    The Cat's Paw (sea breeze)
    Tiger's Paw

    The Salty Shellback

    Ye Old Salt Shanty
    Ye Old Sea Shanty

    Barnacle's Bounty
    Barnacle's Bar and Grill
    The Bower's Bounty
    The Bower's Bar and Grill
    Sal's Seaside Bar and Grill
(You could replace "grill" with "Gill")

    (pick a name)'s SeaRoom

    The Splash Zone

    Davy's (or pick any name ) Dive-in

    Davy Jones' Locker

Devil and the Deep Blue Sea

    Crystal Coast

Wrangler's (or pick any name) Reef and Range

    The Naughty Yachtie

The Tiny Briny (could be a kids menu, too)

    SeaShells

Pier 42 (or pick a number)

    The Sand Bar

    Aqua

    Hope this helps!
