How To Find A Marketing Internship?

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Let me first say that I am not a student, I earned my bachelor’s degree a while ago. I am Brazilian and I am 31 years old. I have extensive experience in the Marketing field, all of it in Brazil. I live in San Diego, CA with my husband, who is American.
I would like to ask if anyone can offer me any advice in finding a Marketing internship here in the US. I would like to start off at the internship level so that I can practice my English and become accustomed to the American office environment. Where can I access information on Marketing internship positions, either on or off-line? I have tried MonsterTrack.com but since I am not a student they cannot help me.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Do you have a Visa that would allow you to work in the United States? Without this, you would not be able to be paid for any work you do.

There are a few routes you could go to find a position. These include:
    1) just call up marketing departments of companies of interest and ask
    2) network. Talk to people and mention what you are looking for.
    3) Work through contacts from where you used to work. Maybe they have business partners in the States, customers in the States, etc., who could all be potential places for you to work at (added benefit, they may want someone who is fluent in Portuguese).

    Good luck.

Peter's suggestions are a good place to start. The work visa is definitely the first thing you need before you can land any job.

Second, since all your work experience is in Brazil, you will need to build up some experience working in America. This is common in many countries such as the US, Canada, Australia, etc for migrant workers.

Also, in a way you are starting from scratch (similar to a fresh grad), in the meantime while you look for paid work, consider volunteering your time in exchange for local work experience doing marketing for smaller firms or non-profits.

I did this when I was still a student (way back....) I volunteered at a PR firm for free but in exchange I could write on my resume that I gained experience working in a PR firm.

Join associations whether it be marketing associations or Brazilians working in the US, etc. This is the 1st step in networking and making contacts. Don't be afraid to let everyone you and your husband know that you are on the lookout for a job.

Since you are a marketer yourself, put your marketing skills to good use by marketing yourself to the best of your ability.

The main thing is to make the most of this time you have to upgrade your English, sell the fact you can help firms target the S American market, etc. It's a tough road, but stay positive as well.
