Barry is right. You may want to skip the press release and just tell the people who count about your name change personally. Even if you did issue a press release, you'd want to tell your best customers and most valued suppliers about it before they read about it in the trade press, wouldn't you?

Depending on the industry, the reasons for the change, and your various consituencies, the way your communicate the change can be very important. It can either look defensive and reactive, or like a real opportunity. If you don't have a great story, I'd recommend a personal approach to the people who matter most. Skip the press release.

Of course, we don't know the whole story here, so it's possible our suggestions are exactly wrong. If you want advice based on better understanding, you'll have to provide more information.

I think the "free 1/2 hour of our service to celebrate the name change" is a real bad idea. It says "we normally overcharge" and "this new name has negotiable prices."

Surely you can find something else of value you can give people ... like a coffee mug with your new name on it, or something like that.

Price reduction just sets you up as a commodity, to be price-shopped each time.
