Hunger In Georgia Project

Posted by Harry Hallman on 1000 Points
This is not so much a question, other than to ask if you really know the facts about hunger in the US and especially Georgia.

As part of our return to the community effort, we have created a web site and viral marketing to build awareness of hunger in Georgia. If you get a chance, take a look and help us spread the word. While the holiday season is a great time to bring attention to this problem the program is an all year project.

As marketers, our job is to spread the word about our client’s products. We can use that same skill to spread the word about the hunger issue. If you are located in geogia we could use some help with PR. If you are not in Georgia you can help your local Food Bank or other organizations helping the hungry.

    Dear Harry:

Thank you for your post about Hunger in Georgia. If enough of us join in the fight against hunger, maybe someday, somehow we can stamp it out.

I've forwarded this along to friends and family.

There was an article in the SF Chronicle (https://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/11/18/CMUES9H9R.DTL&...) about the creator of the Farm To Family program. His program connects packers and growers (who donate first culls - nicked, cut, too big, too small, discolored harvest) with the California Association of Food Banks. It's a win-win for packers/growers (who avoid paying to dump and also get a tax donation) and the food banks (who 34 million pounds of fresh produce).

Kathy thanks for the note. Our site and WOM program is designed to get the facts out. On our site, we do link to the Atlanta Community Food Bank as a place to donate. No donations are made to our site or our organization.

So wherever you live you can seek out (our lists local food banks all over the country) organizations helping feed the hungry in your area and make donations to them,

Jay, you are doing what we as marketers can do best and that is get the word out about the problem and highlight solutions. Thanks for the input.

Karen, thanks for the note. If you know anyone who in the PR field who would like to donate some skills please let them our efforts.

I donate to the food bank regularily, and am a regular contributer at my school. I thinks its great that this issue is finally getting some recognition! I'm donating some more canned foods in your name. Feed the hungry! I feel like Robin Hood!

Thanks csbookworm. There are several colleges who are giving out tee shirts with the slogan Spread the Word Help The Hungry and the URL on them. We also have several stores handing them out. Go get one. They are free.

It would be great if some college students created some videos for YouTube highlighting the issue and the URL. If you know anyone let them know.

    Juliet:

Wow it is such a small world. I grew up not many blocks from this project. I lived at 125 West Wishart Street in North Philly, near Front and Allegany. I often played baseball at the 5th Street fields. Mostly we played in the streets. My grandmother and grand father were both born in that neighborhood, which was about the time it was built.

I am happy you were able to comment just as I had closed this question and appreciate your input. Once people in the city had community and personal gardens so they could get items that were had to find. I remember my mother talking about how they did that during the Second World War. I believe the called them victory gardens.
Anyway thank you for your post.
