Would You Explain Mis-spelling In Url?

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I have a client who is starting a business - Write for You and is concerned that the closest URL is writeforeyou. She then considered going to Write or Edit for You, but thinks that might be redundant.

I think if she's really concerned that potential customers will think she can't spell, she should just put a funny explanation on the site with the header, "What's with the Funky URL?"

Any comments?

Are the "Write For You" legal papers already submitted, or is there still the possibility of changing the name?

Perhaps the owner of WriteForYou.com would be willing to sell their domain to your client. Their website shows no activity for 4 years they're clearly not looking for clients.

Personally, I wouldn't pick a URL that could easily be mis-remembered and therefore potentially confuse a prospective client.

Why pick a name that would require a different URL? And why a hard-to-remember name/URL? Surely there's a better approach to this -- probably a different/better name with an available domain name.

Is your client hung up on the name? Can you persuade her to reconsider? What about something like www.ghostforhire.com ?

Another possibility: How does your client expect people to find her website? If she has a great marketing plan that will drive people to the website through advertised links, then the perfect domain name might not be quite so important. After all, the only way people will find it is by clicking on her link. They might never even know what the domain name really is.

Change the name of the company to match a URL you get obtain or add something to the writeforyou.com URL so you can get it. Like writeforyouinc.com. Something like that.

If writeforyou.com isn't available then come up with something else. If it IS and you client is set on writeforeyou.com then just do a re-direct. (also known as mirror page)
