Building A Global Website

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
My company is a $30 million business-to-business technical information services company. We are regularly acquiring companies. Setting the larger branding issues aside for the moment, we are seeking best practices in the process of refreshing our website. We want to be inclusive of our colleagues in France, Germany, the UK and Italy (marketing/design teams responsible for this initiative are in US, where the company is headquartered). Is there anyone out there who has embraced their company's global village to build an effective site that works on a worldwide as well as local scale?

Good question. I currently have distributors on almost every continent. My company has been looking into taking on the same global website approach you are considering.

Although I cannot speak from experience, I can speak from research...and we have decided to model after Sony. They have a "global headquarters" page where you can select your region, then narrow down even further to a specific country. Each country specific site is in the regional language.

We are currently debating on whether to use translation software or actual interpreters for each language. Personally, I feel an interpreter would be more accurate than a translation program...don't want to risk having something come out the wrong way!

    Check out their site: https://www.sony.net/

It's pretty cool and very efficient.

    I hope that helps!

    Good Luck!
