Could New Name Conflict With Desired Positioning?

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
We are a company that provides products and services necessary for an agency or in-house marketing department to successfully execute a marketing plan and strategy. To clarify, the marketing agencies or groups develop the plans and most if not all of the strategies. This is exactly the target audience who would be considering us as an outsource supplier. We would be marketing TO them.

Our contributions would be mostly during the "execution" parts of a plan, strategy, or campaign. We do photography, printing, trade show displays, fulfillment, hand assembly, promotional items, the mailing, etc. These are the parts we are involved in.

Here is the issue: There is a camp that likes using the words "... Creative Group" as part of a new company name. In my opinion, that could lead to an inference by our prospective customers that we are a "creative" group which could be a direct competitor, rather than a supplier, vendor, service to help them complete a successful marketing effort for their customer.

This is a pretty complete re-branding effort for us, and I am concerned that a name with "Creative" or "Creative Group" could conflict with were we actually should be positioning ourselves.

Am I making too much out of this? Thank very much for any opinions which may head my directions. We are down to the nitty-gritty on time now.

I think your apprehension about putting the phrase "Creative Group" in your company name is well warranted. When I hear Creative Group I think art work and design and if these are not the core competencies of your company you should be careful about using this phrase in a title that will help define who you are.

Thank you Chris. That is exactly my concern too. We have done pretty well over the years acting in a "support services" role for agency and client side marketing groups, and the last thing I want to do is to somehow appear as a competitor to any future business who knows nothing about us other than a name.

I would love to hear from anyone who thinks my concern is baseless. Thank you again!

I'd suggestion using a phrase such as "Supporting Creative Groups" in your tagline, and leave "Creative Group" off your name. That should appease both camps.

I agree - creative group in the name could be confusing. Jay's suggestion as a tagline does sound very good.
