How To Make Into Reality A Unique Service Solution

Posted by bhupi263 on 250 Points
Hi I have no technical qualifications. However, have an ability to always come out with unique solutions to problems, as have done in my career as Public Servant (was awarded Innovation Award in 2015 for another unique solution). I have a new concept which is a very unique service solution (cant write more for obvious reasons). I can sure contact big companies and sell this product off. But that will kill the real idea and the benefits will not reach the intended audience that will benefit from the concept, as this company would be more interested for financial gains. I would rather prefer that some University take over this concept, have this develop as project from final year student(s) as part of degree. Once this is developed, then University can collaborate with different government agencies and offer them and help them in execution. This will become a collaborative venture between Uni and the Government. I am not after any financial gain whatsoever out of this concept, hence opting out for this path. Because of plethora of resources (manpower in shape of students to do research and design the product, labs etc.) at the disposal of the University, and the credibility that this research will carry will ultimately go a long way in its quick adaptation. There will be minimal cost to the University. I live in New Zealand. Any help would be greatly appreciated as how to proceed further; how and whom in University to contact; how to approach finally without revealing my concept in my initial talks. Thank you

Why not look through university research publications to find out specifically who might be your best person to contact based on your idea and the researcher's direction? Then approach them directly.

You're speaking in generalities: the university; the government; big companies; the product, and so on. Until you offer specifics and show proof of concept, until you have something concrete to present it is nigh on impossible to offer a helpful answer.

It's going to be difficult to get anyone to react to your approach unless you give them some reason to believe you can really deliver a meaningful result. The fact that you've done remarkable things in the past may help you get an audience, but it won't substitute for a clearer picture of what you're proposing and what's in it for the university and/or the individual involved.

You will need to face up to this sooner or later, so deal with it now if you want to find a partner to take the idea forward. Perhaps there is someone at a nearby university who will counsel with you and guide your effort once they understand the concept and share your confidence that it can be a big idea with some nurturing.

Dear Jay, Gary and the Moderator, much appreciated with your quick responses. Gary - I hear what you say; at this instant just wanted to know how to proceed further. Gary and the Moderator, your responses have helped in the right direction. This is such a great piece of advice "university who will counsel with you and guide your effort" and this is where I am going to look for now. Just one last thing please, if I may ask. If, after shelling out completely my concept, and they don't want to go ahead, I guess I have let the cat out of the bag for anyone to grab it. Am I right? and If so, some strategy to take care of this aspect, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

If they are honorable people, they will respect your request to keep what they've learned about your idea in confidence. At a minimum you should request confidentiality/non-disclosure up-front.

It's unlikely they would agree to sign a non-disclosure agreement before your meeting. Certainly large companies wouldn't do so because they might have had a similar idea themselves, and they wouldn't want to have you later claim that they breached your confidential information/NDA agreement if they proceed with their approach.
