I'm Starting A Marketing Consulting Company

Marketing will be for medical practices only and need a company name. Medical Marketing Solutions is what I wanted but someone already has it. Consultants seems funny since it's only me.

"Medical Marketing" could be a phrase worth keeping. It tells what you do. "Solutions" has been used so much that it's now an invisible word -- adds no value to the communication.

Even better would be a short phrase that expresses the BENEFIT your clients can expect when they hire you. How will they be better off? WHY should they call you? (Also, WHERE/WHO is your target audience?)

You might find it helpful to read "Rasputin For Hire." The subtitle is "An inside look at consulting between jobs or as a second career." There's a special offer for members of this forum at https://bit.ly/k3Z7m . The book is written specifically for folks who are considering a consulting career/change.

Sorry, but I am 100% opposed to specific business names. Why do you want to limit your market before you even start?

Do a Google search of the largest advertising agencies. How many have descriptive names? Few if any. Why? So they do not pigeonhole themselves into a narrow niche.

Picture this: you happen to meet an owner of a business who has a big marketing problem. You spend an hour talking about his problem and convincing him or her that you have relevant experience and expertise. But then you pull out your business card, and you have to spend the next days and weeks and months convincing people that you are not limited to what your business card and company name and website and marketing materials say.

Look at the names of the top 25 experts on branding on this forum (to the right). None of them have descriptive names. Zero. Why is that? Maybe it is because descriptive names make no sense.

It is sad to see this forum, which originally addressed leading-edge marketing problems, to send into pointless discussions of company names. In the last century, when many companies found suppliers through the Yellow Pages, company names were much more important. Today, relationships and expertise are more important in my opinion. Don't screw up relationships and undersell your expertise by limiting yourself by an overly restrictive company name.

Sorry, I meant to say, "descend into pointless discussions…"

By the way, my username here is a descriptive name. My company name (I'm now out of business, on disability) was a descriptive name. That was a mistake. It pigeonholed me into certain types of work done a certain way. As a small business, you need to chase dollars. If you are successful, you may find that your business looks nothing like you had originally envisioned. Don't spend thousands and thousands of dollars painting yourself into a corner. Choose a generic company name. You can have specialized taglines and specialized DBAs and specialized websites and divisions of your company focused on specific markets and/or specific offerings. But this focus should be at the opportunity level, and not at the corporate level. Good luck.
