I believe what he is talking about is how at the turn of the century the development of the King Road Drag made it possible to grade roads which made it possible to deliver mail on a regular schedule to rural farmers which made it possible for Sears to deliver their Catalog which contained their "World Wide Stock" of "every good available in the world with description and prices" which then made it possible for rural farmers to order them and have anything now delivered to to their farms.

It was a revolutionary development in our history.

    Hope that helps.

Malcolm Gladwell was a staff writer for The New Yorker, and had been studying trends like he talks about in "The Tipping Point" for several years. He wrote several articles for the magazine that he developed into the book.

As a result of its popularity, I don't think Mr. Gladwell has to work as much as he used to.
