The “nationals” Baseball Team? Name Options?

Posted by SteveByrneMarketing on 500 Points
It was announced today that the “Nationals” will be the new name for Washington D.C.’ s baseball team. The Nationals? -- A quick office poll determined nobody liked The Nationals name.

Our office suggestions include:
The Feds
The Deficits
The Eagles
The Congressmen (The Senators name is owned by the Texas Rangers)
The 202’s

And my favorite: The West Wings

So, the question is what would you name the new baseball team. Who knows with enough public outcry maybe the powers that be will change their minds.

Rikki -- nice input, the Washington Cherry Blossoms – I can see it.

Shelley -- you’re too funny, 2008 is just around the corner.

I would prefer the Bandits (named after all the "beltway bandit" contracting firms) or "Commandos" or "Regulators" - but certainly not "Nationals".

Great stuff, personally I’m liking Partisans, Beltway Bandits, Presidents, Filabusters (Filibusters) and Potomacs.

Lots of good creative – MLB should have come here first.

    Here’s an update:

Renaming the Expos originally was intended as a task for the club's new owner. However, the club's buyer still is weeks away from being determined, season-ticket sales already have started and the holiday shopping rush is imminent. So MLB executives decided to conduct the process themselves.

The task involved a broad collection of surveys, focus-group data, internal research and input from D.C. officials, most notably Mr. Williams.

Nationals beat out a dozen other candidates to be the team name, Miss Occi said. "The positives just kept coming up again and again. We looked at a lot of other names, but Nationals stood out rather quickly," she said.

The Nationals still await D.C. Council approval for financing of the new ballpark, as well as ratification by MLB owners of the move from Montreal. Both steps are expected in the next three weeks.

Thanks to all for participating, lots of thoughtful alternative names. We’ll see how the “Nationals” work out for the club next season.
