One last interesting study I found:

Sorry for all the links but to be honest, posted research results (meterics) are where you are going to find the most accurate answer.

I always spend around 1-2% (UK Telecoms Market).
REMEMBER: Its now WHAT you spend its HOW you spend it.

Rather than focus on a percentage, work out your tactical plan through your marketing plan and work out what tactics you need to deploy to get the job done and achive your goals.

List them out (spreadsheet is fine). Tactic, goal, spend, % sales leads, % sales, average revenues from sales, ROI.

That was you know exactly how much you need to spend and if they cut your budget, you know what tactics you can't do, and therefore what goals you will be unable to achieve.

Actually if you want a quick and dirty budget forecast, I have used this in UK High Tech, and it usually gives pleasing results.

Total Marketing Budget = 2% of Sales Revenues

    Marketing Spend broken down as:

    Business Press 34%
    Literature 10%
    Exhibitions 14%
    Direct Marketing 8%
    PR 3%
    Regional Newspapers 3%
    National Newspapers 5%
    Sponsorship 10%
    Hospitality 13%
