Distributing An Ebook

Posted by Levon on 1000 Points
I am putting together an awesome new eBook which is going to revolutionize the way people market and promote on the internet. I am thinking of a $10-20 price point for the PDF download.

The eBook is not done yet, however I have already begun thinking about distribution. What cost effective distribution channels have others on this forum used to distribute their e-books. I am not looking to give away a huge cut of the action? I want to keep the lion's share because I wrote the book. Is there an automated way to get the book distributed where once payment is received - it automatically gets emailed to the recipient?

This is going to sound harsh, and maybe you have an answer, BUT:

You wrote a book on marketing and promoting on the Internet, and yet you're asking for help on how to market your book? There's something amiss with that, isn't that?

I also think you're grossly underestimating the importance of being willing to pay people very well for their help in marketing your book. For example, on ClickBank it's not uncommon for publishers to give up 75% of the sale to the affiliate.

Sure, you could offer only a 25% commission, but the publisher who offers 75% is probably going to get 10-20x the affiliates, and therefore will make 3-7x as much money.

Plus, an ebook is not (should not) be a one-shot deal. You're building a list of people that you can then market other products to. I know publishers who gladly break even on the first sale because they know the lifetime value of the customer is there.

Regardless of what you do, good luck with you new book!

No offense taken – I am asking for advice from other successful authors who have found a delivery method for their ebooks that is working well for them right now.

To get into the book without giving the idea away -- my book specifically deals with promotion on the internet and not on the finite details of the delivery method that will get a ebook delivered to a recipient with minimal cost.

I already have PayPal on several of my sites. The limitations with PayPal is that it does not automate the delivery of the book. That is what I am after -- a fully automated delivery system that after the order is taken it delivers the book to the recipient with minimal wait time and minimal cost out of my pocket.

    Dear Levon,

Had Paul not been the first to say it, I would have.

Levon, I enjoy reading your input here on M. Profs, but telling people you're putting together an e-book that's is going to revolutionize the way people market and promote online without appearing to know how to distribute it may not be the smartest move.

    Why?

Because it drives a large dump truck straight through your wall of credibility.

The other thing to consider is that an e-book alone might not be enough. You'll gain more traction with video AND audio, and you might want to look at spending a good amount of money on an optimized PPC campaign or a forum launch of some kind.

Either this or you'll need some serious friends who know what they're talking about and who have what you may lack: a list of willing buyers.

You can have the best product in the world, really you can. But without qualified traffic, you're screwed.

I follow the world of online marketing pretty closely. I'm no expert but over the last year or so I've made some solid connections with eight to ten of the Internet's top online marketers. And here, we're talking about people that can make over $1 million in one day.

Between them these men and women make several hundred million dollars every year. How? By giving a lot of stuff away.

It sounds counter productive I know but Levon, all this "lion's share" stuff? It won't win you many friends.

To get word of your rocking new product out into the world you need affiliates and joint venture partners; you need a free report, and you need some kind of loss leader (well, you don't NEED one, but you'll do better by giving some of your content away for free).

You'll also need a launch platform.

The loss leader? That's a low end product that has a lot of perceived value and you sell this up front. Except you don't sell it. You give it away to your affiliates and you offer them 100 percent of the profit.

    All of it.

In exchange, they drive traffic to your sales site. Your profit? That lies in the back end, not at the front.

There's more to this. A lot more. But the point is this: being awesome isn't enough.

You've got to offer value and benefits (to customers AND to affiliates and JV partners), and on top of that, you've got to offer proof that your revolutionary new method works.

To offer value you've got to be willing to give stuff away and, in the first instance, you've even got to be prepared to just break even.

On top of this you've got to test your price, test and refine your sales copy, and test and refine your landing pages and offers. And if all this wasn't enough, you've also got to get people to know you, like you, and trust you.

As much as you may have worked your butt off on this book the truth is that no one cares how much of the book you wrote; they want to know what's in it for them.

    I hope this helps.

    Dear Levon,

For automation, what about www.clickbank.com. ?

They'll handle all the downloading for you, all the returns, refunds, and delivery.

They'll charge you a fee per transaction, but at least the delivery will be taken off your shoulders.

I hope this helps. Good luck to you.

Thanks Gary for the lecture on Internet Marketing and how to achieve credibility, but I think my request was taken out of context. I think you guys are trying to knock me off of my high horse after I broke into the TOP 25 as of this morning (lol).

Again I will repeat my request, I am looking for a cheap delivery method like the one that Inbox just offered above that will get my product to the people at minimal cost.

And Thanks Inbox -- That script looks stellar - I am going to check it out. If there is any other tools, applications or systems that people are using right now and like because it is working well for them - do let me know - I always let you know.

I am asking you like I would ask a friend who may of recently launched an Ebook who might of been delivering the book one way and found a cheaper method to deliver it.

I have given plenty of free advice on this forum and am only asking for someone to shed some light on this road that I have not travelled yet.

    Clickbank has its shortcomings...

First, once the product download link has been given, it can be shared with just about anyone.

There are a couple little tricks that Clickbank suggests to get around this, but they are very easy to circumvent.

Also, you pay $50 to have your product reviewed, with additional products costing $30. And if you don't make one sale per month, your product is removed from the marketplace. (Of course, it's a clunker, so you'd probably kill it anyway.)

The fees are high, too. For a cheaper product, it comes out to like 7% of sales. And you don't get your money for 60 days as Clickbank has a very liberal refund policy.

Levon, I know that I have ordered digital products through PayPal which then directed me to the link where I could take delivery. I would bet that if you go to a place like guru.com or elance.com, you can find a freelancer to help you quickly and cheaply.

Let us know how it all turns out.

PayPal can do digital delivery. Either use a service (such as detailed on: https://cms.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/?cmd=_render-content&content_ID=developer...) or you can roll your own with a clever set of email addresses and autoresponders upon a successful transaction (if you're web-savvy).

Here's one video describing one way to roll your own:

    Hi Levon,

    First to answer your question

Go through this very usefull link which tells about how to distribute Book Online
    https://www.streetdirectory.com/travel_guide/140945/world_wide_web/how_to_d...

Well my take on your querry is bit different. Before getting into distribution mode, take look at my suggestions:( May be you have already thought about it)

    1. Build up Your Website:
    a. Synopsis of the book
    b. Snick Pick of the Table of Contains
    c. Little about the author ( Yourself)
    d. Purchase section - You can have a paypal account & sale can happen.

Advantage of having website is that it will increase your online credibilty. PLEASE make a neat website to retain INTEREST.

    2. Social Media:
By setting up the website, you got everything to say about the book> Now the task is to popularise the website.
    a. Tweet about the book on Twitter
    b. Pass on the word of mouth on Facebook
    c. Open up a discussion on Linkedin
    d. Prepare a PPT on Author stream

    3. Online:
Once you done with your social media bit, you can get a sponsered link on google, put your book on sale in amazon. You can then spread this info. again on social media.

I hope this will help you out,

    Swap

First, congratulations on making the top 25!

I had been using an automatic download script on my PayPal thank-you page. It was easy and free. Then somewhere along the way I stopped worrying so much about security and now just offer the download (without a script) on the same thank-you page. It works fine, as far as I can tell.

A quick question though: Why an eBook instead of a real ink-on-paper book? The writing and pre-press preparation are the same, and the production/shipping costs are small compared to (a) the selling price, (b) the marketing costs, and (c) the greatly expanded distribution opportunities. Besides, there's a great credential in being a published author (of a REAL book).

Since you will have done all the work, why limit the business to just that small fraction of people who will purchase an eBook for almost as much as a hardcopy book?

Finally, as you well know, the success of your venture will depend almost entirely on the marketing effort. (That's true whether it's an eBook or ink-on-paper.) Make sure you think through the marketing and business plans carefully and budget enough for marketing to allow you to reach your objective.

This all from a relatively new author and publisher who has been through most of these issues a few [dozen] times! :-)

Do I get a copy of the book too?

I am not a big fan of clickbook. Paypal is very easy to set up an e-book distribution system from your own site, and they take a very small amount for their service.

YOUR MONTHLY SALES YOUR FEE PER TRANSACTION EXAMPLES

    $0 to $3,000 2.9% + $0.30 $3.20 fee on a $100 sale
    $3,000+ to $10,000 2.5% + $0.30* $2.80 fee on a $100 sale
    $10,000+ to $200,000 2.2% + $0.30* $2.50 fee on a $100 sale
    $200,000+ Call 1-888-818-3928 for pricing.

So, for a $20 ebook, they take 88cents.

    visit https://merchant.paypal.com/cgi-bin/marketingweb?cmd=_render-content&conten... for more info.

A quick email to tech support at paypal will get you a step by step on setting this up on your web site.

There will be a percentage of people who you sell to who will copy the ebook and forward it to friends, but don't worry about it. People who steal from you would probably not have paid the $20 anyway.

Ebooks are a very good distribution channel. Simple, easy, no warehousing, no shipping, no printing.

    Good luck
