Liquor Brand/starting A Company

Posted by qburruss on 250 Points
I'm wanting to produce an alcoholic beverage, something along the lines of a liqueur. Should I know how to produce the actual alcohol, making the vodka myself or is that where a distillery comes in? Yes I know producing spirits can be illegal but I want to know if it's important I have that personal knowledge or do I team up with another source or entity that would help me?

The more you know about the entire process, the better you'll be able to judge the quality of the ingredients, your team, and the result. If you want to be a master beverage crafter - learn those skills. If your goal is to sell alcohol to stores, start with the end goal in mind. Learn what it takes to have stores buy from you and/or your distributor, and work backwards from there.

Where, geographically speaking, do you want to do this?

It really depends on what YOU want to do, as Jay suggests. If you want to produce the product (as you state), then you obviously have to learn how to do that. If you want to market or sell it, then you have to learn how to do that. The skills required for each are quite different from each other.

So step #1 is to be very clear on what it is YOU want to do.

A good distillery can make alcohol to someone's specifications well. They likely would not be good at figuring out what flavor/blend would be bets for your company. So someone on your team (whether you or someone else) should be very knowledgeable on making the alcohol and be the one who knows flavors and chooses the right blend to sell.
