Finding Advertisers

Posted by lastdazeblog on 250 Points
Hi,

Hope someone can help.

I have an online magazine which has been live for 6 months. In that time we have seen phenomenal growth, and a strong loyal following (over 100k followers on Instagram already) The fact that we are growing at such a pace is amazing, but I need help in getting advertisers, I have a media kit with all relevant information and pricing, but I don't know who to contact or where to go. Is there anyone that can offer advice on what to do. Do I approach advertising agencies? Do I go straight to companies?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much in advance !

The first thing you need to do is identify the potential advertisers who would stand to benefit most. Then make sure you have a presentation that lays out what the benefit would be for them to advertise with you.

Once you have that, you go directly to those companies and present your case -- again with the focus on what's in it for them. No third party will be as persuasive as you can be. Let your passion show, but always make it clear that their success is the only important consideration.

Without knowing more specifics it's hard to give any advice that will get you closer to your goal.

As mgoodman said, you need to determine who would get most benefit from advertising. Who are the readers of the magazine and what companies would want to reach them? Those are who you would want to target.

Assuming you can figure out who you want down to a bunch of very specific companies that you can name, I would then approach them directly.

I wrote a blog post about my experience with a magazine I started a while back, though it is more aimed at price of ads than who/how to sell the ads. https://expandabroad.blogspot.com/2011/06/ads-in-new-publication.html

I would suggest that you focus on companies who are currently happily buying from your competition. Some people believe in advertising, and some don't. If this were my project, I would work to build a list of companies who advertise in related magazines, on related websites, and/or exhibit at related tradeshows.
