Downtown Tag Line

Posted by chadmbanks on 500 Points
We're in the process of positioning our downtown as a cultural center - we have several museums, public art, galleries, murals and 2 theaters. On a different side of the cultural coin, we also have a rich immigrant history and have quite a few immigrant owned businesses that still occupy downtown. Our strategic planning sessions have led us to the direction of the cultural center of our community. We've tossed around a few tag-lines that we can use including "Culture Happens Here!" or "Where Culture Lives" but we're not loving them. If you have any ideas for a tagline, we'd love to hear it as we further develop our downtown branding.

It would help us to know why you are "not loving" the two taglines you mention. Your not-loving suggests that "loving" is a key criterion for accepting and using a suggestion, yet you don't provide enough information to get us pointed in the right direction.

We're good at branding and taglines, but we need to know who the target audience is and what you are trying to communicate to them ... as well as any constraints or caveats.

Finally, it would be helpful to know what the name of the city is, and how it is currently perceived by your target audience. Positioning isn't something you do. It's the perception in the minds of your target audience, and it's not so easy to change after it's been firmly implanted. A new tagline is rarely the key to a successful re-positioning.

Is the problem with the word "culture" (which may sound too highbrow)? Is the downtown area wanting to position itself as a community hangout? Or a great date location? Or family expedition? What group of people are you trying to entice - and why aren't they aren't interested in what you offer?

Good questions all around. Downtown is on the rebound here, like many downtowns. It's always been the heart of the community and the place where the ethnic businesses live. We are known as the Home of 56 Nationalities (Rock Springs, WY) and that's what we're trying to build on/reinforce. The primary focus will be tourists although clearly we'll need to reinforce what downtown offers to residents alike. We do have pretty big support locally - the area is supported by local shoppers, etc - but we are just looking to build that even more and reinforce that position in everyone's mind.

Without the luxury of having all the strategic background at my disposal it's going to be difficult to answer this question. Do you have a DropBox link you could share in which we'll find a PDF of what you've come up with so far?
