Not only do social media consumers visit their favorite social sites throughout the day, but almost one-half (48%) of them check Twitter or Facebook during the night or as soon as they wake up in the morning, according to a survey from Retrevo.

Younger social media users are most likely to check in with social sites at night: 19% of those under age 25 check in with Facebook or Twitter whenever they wake up during the night, compared with 11% of those age 25+, the study found.

Below, other findings from Retrevo's Gadgetology Report.

Social media connections are on peoples' minds early in the morning: 42% of social media users check in with Facebook or Twitter as soon as they wake up in the morning, and 16% say social media provides them with their morning news.

Some 61% of social media consumers under age 25 check Facebook at least once a day, including 18% who check it every couple of hours.

Meanwhile, 56% of consumers age 25+ check in with Facebook at least once a day, including 11% of those who check it every couple of hours.

iPhone Owners More Social

iPhone owners use Facebook and Twitter more often and in more places: 28% of iPhone owners visit  Twitter or Facebook before getting out of bed in the morning, compared with just 18% of all social media consumers under age 25 and 8% of those age 25+.

Similarly, 26% of iPhone owners check in with Twitter or Facebook before turning on the TV, compared with 17% each of all social media consumers.

Interruption by Text Message

Consumers were asked how they felt about being interrupted at various times and occasions by electronic (including text) messages: 40% said they didn't mind being interrupted for a message, 32% said interruption during a meal was fine, and 7% said they would even check out a message during an intimate moment.

Consumers under age 25 (49%) are nearly twice as willing as those age 25+ (27%) to accept an electronic message during a meal—as well as during a meeting (22% and 11%, respectively).

About the data: The Retrevo Gadgetology Report is an ongoing study of people and electronics from the consumer electronics shopping and review site Retrevo.com. The data are from a February 2010 online survey of 1,000 people, evenly distributed across gender, age, income, and location in the US.
