How Small-Business Owners Are Using Mobile Technology

by   |    |  3,377 views

Some 66% of small-business owners are using mobile devices and/or mobile solutions as part of their operations, according to a recent report from Constant Contact.

Of those small-business owners using mobile devices, 73% said they use their phones or tablets to conduct social media marketing, and 71% said they use their devices to conduct email marketing.

When asked what types of mobile/social advertising they currently employ, 97% said they use social media platforms like YouTube, Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Location-based promotions, such as Foursquare check-ins, came in second at 17%, and text messaging was third at 15%.

Below, additional findings from the Constant Contact Mobile Technology Survey:

Mobile Optimized Websites

  • 34% of the small business owners surveyed have a mobile-optimized website.
  • 70% of these websites are connected to social media platforms.

The Holdouts

Of the 34% of owners not using any mobile device or solution for their business, 65% have no plans to do so in the future, mainly citing a lack of customer demand.

Mobile Apps for Managing Operations

Small businesses owners reported using a variety of applications to manage operations:

  • 82 % use a calendar/time management app.
  • 74 % use a customer communications app.
  • 52 % use a GPS/mapping app.
  • 44 % use an accounting/invoicing app.
  • 44 % use an app for industry news/information consumption.
  • 29 % use a travel planning app.

About the research: The report was based on a survey administered in March, 2013 to 1,305 participants in the Constant Contact Small Biz Council – a research panel of US small businesses and nonprofits recruited from the Constant Contact customer base.

Interesting read as this survey reflects our company's philosophy and what we have been seeing the level of interest from our clients in using mobile platforms as a customer engagement tool. We will be soon launching a product that would enable small business owners effectively manage their social media platforms.

It's important to look that these statistics came from a CONSTANT CONTACT client base. So the headline is bit misleading. Always look where the statistics come from.

This does not speak for all small businesses, this only speaks of those who are regularly using email marketing therefore are more friendly to social engagement and mobile demands. There is still a huge majority of small- medium businesses who actually don't utilize any of those above strategies.

Does the usage of mobile devices increase the revenue of companies who use and if it does by how much?
Also all the companies that have presence in the different social media, what percentage of their annual revenues come from each of the social media networks?

It's critical to look that these facts originated from a Constant Contact customer base. Interesting to read the statistics. And always look where the detail hail from. I would say small businesses are impacted by mobile technology, and they are in the direction to promote or market their business since the mobile marketing is one of the leading ways to promote the business.Recently I narrated an article about Mobile application in business growth. You can see the blog with this link: http://custommobileapplications.weebly.com/1/post/2013/05/mobile-applicatio...

Very interesting article. It seems like 10-15 years ago you were looked at weird if you were using a blackberry to accomplish tasks. To think how far we have come now that we frown on businesses who aren't using tech devices to their advantage. The iPad is a great device that businesses are rapidly adopting and handing out to their employees. It is the new age of the business world as you essentially can do everything you need for work or your personal life through the tablet. Lots of great apps available to help you efficiently work, share and present data in a safe and secure way. This is really interesting Ayaz! We too accede to your numbers on Email marketing usage from the mobile phones. According to our recently published infographic on responsive mobile email by our Email Monks team: http://www.emailmonks.com/mobile-email-templates/responsive-email-design-mo... 43% of the people have started to check their emails on mobile and it is expected to surpass 50% by end of 2013. That said, the number of small business owners optimizing website or email for mobile will surely four fold.

Ayaz & Email Monks you are absolutely right, the number of mobile users accessing emails from mobile are increasing. With the increase in technology, smart phone users and the number of users using their email accounts through mobile are also increasing. Moreover mid and small cap business owners are also moving towards responsive websites & email templates. Moreover we @ www.sparkemail.com also recommend our clients to get responsive email as well as newsletter templates.
