Linkedin For Networking?

Posted by Anonymous on 50 Points
Hey guys. I've been using LinkedIn as a tool for online business networking and found it to be pretty effective way to meet and connect with other people.

Are any of you using it? How about competing or alternative products? Have any other suggestions?

It would be interesting for a bunch of Marketing Prof regulars to join a network like that together and help each other build out our professional network of contacts and refer work and clients to each other.

Just an idea, if you're interested leave a comment or just connect with me on LinkedIn.

Love to hear about any other similar tools too.

I am on LinkedIn, Ryze, and Orkut. Haven't done much with any of them, besides use to find people at companies I wanted contacts at or to reconnect with people from my past.

I like LinkedIn because it let me upload a list of contact and whenever someone from my list signs on, it tells me.

Orkut is for personal reasons. I follow various communities (what they call their message groups) there related to hobbies and activities. A few too many spam messages on the business related message groups.

Ryze is kind of like in the middle. Can do some searching, but limited ability unless you are a premium member. Some message areas, but not as good as Orkuts. I like their non-computer meetings, though. I have found the people at the "Mixers" to be friendly and outgoing - real easy to network at. I think that comes from everyone being there with the purpose of networking, where at business association meetings, people seem more hesitant about networking.

I'm on LinkedIn but haven't gained any consulting work out of it, although I have contacted one persion to ask a question in their area of expertise.

Ecademy spammed me something horrible. I mean members not linked to me selling MLM. So I got off that one asap. Same with zerodegrees. And Ryze... Spoke seems more business orientated but less user-friendly than Linked In. Frankly I haven't time to be on every one of them so I picked LinkedIn because people I knew were on there.

There are a few MP/KHE members on LinkedIn already. Look at my profile https://www.linkedin.com/profile?viewProfile=&key=104367&fromSearch=0&sik=1... and you'll see a few names you know linked to me. Not necessarily using their MP/KHE names, though!

Maybe one day KHE will offer a similar connecting service. I guess in a way it does now, just that people don't fill always in their profiles so it's hard to know what they may do, and how members could help one another.

Good argument for completing yiour bio and profile details at MP/KHE!

    Hope this helps

I'm also on LinkedIn and ecademy.

I personally find linkedin more useful for making contacts with people.
The problem I have with ecademy is that although they have a huge membership base, not a lot of people seem to actually use it!

    Hi all

i was going thru' the LinkedIn website as mentioned by KK+. seems a very attractive and interesting site.

BUT i have a query with regards to joining LinkedIn. I had asked my first question in this forum regarding my career. to summarize briefly i had my career in FMCG marketing as trade marketing and brand manager (pls have a look at my bio) and now i am in logistics industry as International Project Manager.

    https://www.marketingprofs.com/ea/qst_question.asp?qstID=2504

my question is if i become a member i have to fill in a profile page and have to tell my company name, industry type etc.(current Logistics Industry related). Will that be a bar in networking with people of FMCG at LinkedIn???

Zahid, Paul, Shelly, counting on your ideas.

    thanks

    Responding to Mushfique's question...

How much (or how little) info you use to describe yourself is usually up to you on networking sites like LinkedIn. My gut tells me that the more people know, the more useful the network will be to you.

There are details you might choose to omit, however, like when your prison sentence is due to end.
