Should you spend intermittent time throughout the day on social media? Or would you recommend being 'always on' monitoring all channels?

Should the owner himself be monitoring all social media channels and answering questions/making comments? Or can you delegate this task to a dedicated marketing team or trusted employee?

Will you cover the question, "Do we even WANT to become an Über-Connected Company with Social Media?" Is it worth the significant commitment of time/resources? How can we tell which companies are good candidates for "Über-Connectedness" and which are not?

    My comments/thoughts/opinions are in parenthesis:

    Darcy,

Should you spend intermittent time throughout the day on social media?

    (No.)

Or would you recommend being 'always on' monitoring all channels? (Again, no.)

Should the owner himself be monitoring all social media channels and answering questions/making comments?

    (Again, no.)

Or can you delegate this task to a dedicated marketing team or trusted employee?

(Yes, but only with CLEAR briefing and only to permit that person to speak to the audience on certain issues OR, to brief the SM manger to supply content that the CEO then approves and ONLY that content is posted.)

Social media can be a HUGE TIME SINK! The answer to this is to schedule content delivery through Hootsuite or Tweetdeck and to then just check streams once per day.

Otherwise, and unless one is RUTHLESS, SM just takes over and you never get anything done.

    Michael,

"Do we even WANT to become an Über-Connected Company with Social Media?"

(We really ought to consider keeping our fingers on the pulse, lest we be left behind, BUT NOT MORNING, NOON, AND NIGHT!. It's HERE that social media mangers come into their own and it's also where a GOOD social media manager can be worth his or her weight in gold).

It CAN BE worth the significant commitment of time/resources if one has a huge list or following, but again, these things must be balanced.

"How can we tell which companies are good candidates for "Über-Connectedness" and which are not?"

I think that depends on audience size and returns in terms of sales volume.

Just my humble two cents' worth.

Is Sandy Carter going to join us, or shall we just talk among ourselves?
