Need Student Insight - What Brings You Here?

Posted by SRyan ;] on 2400 Points
The questions from university students are increasing here, but the QUALITY of the questions is, well, pretty dismal.

If you're a student, here's your chance to earn some points to use on future postings... if you promise to compose your future questions well, that is! ;]

» How did you find out about this forum?

» What can we do to discourage people from simply posting a homework assignment here?

» To put it better -- how do you think we can improve the likelihood that people will use this forum to its best advantage?

I'm awarding points to the most honest, thoughtful answers. (If you're NOT a student, please remain seated.)

    hi shelly,

i found KHE by doing a google search on my first day of university.

I think the search was "marketing help".

Way's in which to stop students from posting there home work:

*keep doing what we are doing, but take it a step further. Remove the question and send them a email informing them of what they need to do to get there question to an accptable level of insite.

    * Have a pop up saying " we do not do home work here, we are willing to help but you nedd to do XZY for a responce."

    * I am currently writing a FAQ on how to ask questions, if Val likes it i will let her have it.

    * We could have a page on how to use search engines poroperlay ( this is included in the FAQ).

    * We could screen each question BEFORE it gets posted, eg Val or a suitable member of insuders has to approve the question before it can be posted on the board. ( i dont hink this one is that good of an idea)

    * We could have a section on KHE where we move all the bad questions called "the recycle bin" and stop search engines from cataloging the page. When the student makes a suitable question we will move it to the student catagory.

This is all i have for now, i will post back later when i have time, becasue i am at work now and my boss is looking at me with the angry eye.

Ps sorry if there are any typing error

Carl, you get forty lashes with cold spaghetti!

No, seriously, I'm glad you got the conversation started.

It will be interesting to see if ANY students even notice this thread. So far the offline forum community has the impression that students are just hit-and-run visitors...

I will keep this post open for a week to see who and what will come to the surface!

Will, thanks for the terrific insight. I'm going to keep this question open for at least a week, and hope to hear back from you Monday.

You've already been a big help!

    Kyleweb, thanks for your answers.

So, you think we should just delete poorly written questions from students? That's certainly an option, I guess! ;]

Are you saying that students wouldn't be likely to use this forum at ALL if they knew that they couldn't just post a homework assignment verbatim? Interesting...

I don't think we want to discourage new members from joining, but we definitely don't want to see any student registering multiple times to post new questions.

Respecta, I'm glad you chimed in. You did a good job participating in your own Q&A thread in November.

I wonder if that was because you are a "better student," or if you somehow knew how to get the most out of an online forum?
  • Posted by SRyan ;] on Author
That might work, Will. I wonder, however, if any "qualifying" steps that we put in place might just encourage those members to work around the system by not claiming themselves to be students.

Oh well, no solution will be easy OR perfect!

Yes, Deepali, I think we are pretty good at spotting student questions here, regardless of the category they're in.

Three or four of us have become the self-appointed hallway monitors of this forum, and we hand out lots of Have You Read Da Guidelines slips every day!

You're right, it rarely has an impact.

We'll probably keep doing it, however, unless/until the MarketingProfs team adds a feature that allows some of the Experts to kill the homework questions.

Thanks for speaking up! I'll close this by Friday, so look for some points then.

Jill, I think it's interesting that the most frequent suggestion they've made so far is to DELETE bad student questions. Seems extreme... but maybe not!

Some of the Experts here already have access to Admin buttons to recategorize postings. When we move a question to the Student category, the KHE system generates an email to the poster explaining why (and discouraging the use of the forum as a homework landfill). Sometime in the future, perhaps we can implement a button to incinerate the question and generate a similar auto-email.

Thanks for commenting. The thread closes late Friday, everyone!
