Looking For A Free Tool To Reduce Photo Size

Posted by telemoxie on 250 Points
some pictures taken with cell phones are over a megabyte in size. I know there are some free tools which can shrink these down a bit and make them more manageable. Which do you prefer? Thanks.

What are you going to do with these photos? Are you just trying to save storage space, or are you going to display/print the images? If the latter, what software do you plan to use?

at this point, I'm trying to make them e-mail friendly. I tried to compress the four files, and the resulting file is over 8 MB. That is pretty ridiculous.

Compressing an image file isn't enough. To reduce the file size of an image you need to reduce both its resolution AND its dimensions. One of the best free online tools to help you do this is: https://pixlr.com

I generally reduce the size (dimensions) of the image. If you use a Windows machine, you should have Paint a a utility already installed. Open the picture in there, go to the menus and use the resize option, then save as.
