Choosing Markets For Focus Group Research

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I am managing an A&U study with both qual and quant components, and am looking for guidelines to help me select 2-3 representative markets/cities (in the U.S.) to conduct focus groups in. I am located in CA, and don't have a big travel budget. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If there is a constraint in terms of budget, I suggest you design an online questionaire and seek answers. You can also create your data sheet online, so that your questionaire replies and data entry can be integrated easily which would further help in your analysis.

For qualitative study, elaborate the group details a further more...for instance a mix of age groups and professions, then if require segregate them into male and femals. Restrict the group size to 4.
For a better representation of cities, try to incorporate respondents in your FGD who belong to other states and are at present in CA due to jon opportunities or any other reason. They will be able to give you a flovor of other cities being in CA.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Cindy -

It would be helpful to know more about the characteristics of your target market before recommending any specific cities.

Also, if travel budget is one of the main issues, you might want to consider conducting focus groups via the internet. There are some different methodologies out there, but they can really help to eliminate the cost of travel since people participate from their home computers. I've used these groups very successfully for some clients - let me know if you'd like more information.

    Good luck!

Focus groups by phone, or phone and internet are perfectly possible. They would be shorter than traditional face-to-face groups and typically you can only have a maximum of 5-6 people taking part (some skill is needed by the moderator to keep everyone involved).
