Direct Mail Versus Our Desire To Be Green

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
It is real easy to say lets get rid of junk mail. This would save lots of trees, etc, etc. But what is never mentioned by the Green folks is just how big and important direct mail is to our economy.

Where can I find out how large direct mail is in the US? Including how many people/jobs are associated with direct mail?

I am writing an article and I want to inlcude both sides to this story.

    Hi Jeff,

You might try talking to the Direct Marketing Association.
    They are at: www.the-dma.org

    1120 Avenue of the Americas
    New York, NY 10036-6700
    Telephone: 212.768.7277

    Best of luck
    Paul

Paul is right - the DMA is a wonderful resource for direct marketers, and also has a great deal of information pertaining to all issues relevant to direct marketing.

I would also try the American Marketing Association -

    https://www.marketingpower.com/

They are also an excellent resource.

    Good luck!

On the contraire - raw energy powers servers that keep pages like this one working. Not to mention all the silicon and plastics and metals that have to be mined and manufactured each and every year to keep digital mediums running.

To add to what Paul said, when you contact The DMA, ask for Anna Chernis in the library. She's responsible for producing the DMA Statistical Fact Book.

The industry is also addressing green issues. There are now printers that use only recycled paper, vegetable-based (non-toxic) inks, etc. And, if you don't want to receive direct mail (or less of it), The DMA has a mail preference service which will take your name off of mailing lists.

    It's at https://www.dmachoice.org/MPS/proto1.php
