How Do I Determine Market Size?

I am in the beginning stages of starting a website for cruising sailors, and I want to learn about my potential market base. How does one go about tracking down numbers, such as: How many boats sail each year in the Caribbean and Mexico?

    My guess would be the Coast Guard and any other waterway licensing agencies.

    Other orgs like the FCCA (Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association) offer research and stats for cruise line travelers.

    You can also find the number of boats sold in last few years from respective area’s boat sellers. Total numbers of boats sold in particular year/ years would give you an idea about your market base/size.

    You need to be very specific about the characteristics (demographics) of the intended audience to insure that you get accurate information when conducting your market research..

    I assume that you mean people who go on large-boat cruises - "cruising sailors" can also be interpreted as to mean those who charter boats - an entirely different crowd.

    Assuming you are looking for those who go on the cruise ships - a very good source of statistics is the subscribers of magazines that cater to that market. These are easily available in professional public relations directories - but you can assemble them from reviewing the media kits online for the selected publications.

    Here are some that may help you (from Bacon's Magazine Directory):

    Carribbem Travel & Life - 150,000
    Caribbean Travel Planner = 200,000
    Cruise Lifestyles = 200,000
    Cruise N'Travel En Espanol = 35,000
    Cruise Travel = 153,645

    Reviewing these, I would say that a figure between 150,000 to 200,000 would be a reasonable estimate.

    Thank you for your suggestions. I’m focusing mostly on smaller private sailing yachts. I was hoping for an organization that tracks the international movements of private sailing yachts known as 'Cruisers'.
