Using that analogy, are there benchmarks for web based advertising (banners being one) where the click through metric by industry is available.
What prompted this question was an episode of This Week In Startups where Jason Calacanis interviews Seth Sternberg, CEO and Co-Founder of Meebo.

At about the 44min mark in the audio they have a discussion about banners and open rates. Meebo offers a 728x90 banner that, when moused over/clicked, offers a rich media space 900x400. The 728x90 banner has a CPM of $12.50 and has an open rate of 1%. This is where Jason comments "1%, which is 4x the average".
This comment got me thinking: What are the averages? Are there any published banner click / open rate averages by industry or web site type?
Thoughts on this appreciated.
