What Are Average International Consultancy Rates?

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I am researching international (mostly online) marketing consultancy rates for a startup of a friend. The consultancy will be at the higher end of the price spectrum.

The thing is that I havent been able to find any quantative or qualitative information about rates per country.

I know there are many ways of pricing but I think most companies either charge per hour or by project (which is usually a product of how many hours they think they will spend and how much they charge by hour, and thus should be quotable in hourly rates).

I don't need statistically valid results, they can be anecdotal and could be quoted as a spread as well (so; US 50-120USD, UK 70-140USD etc.). Another way I could see this work is by income index, if I know by what percentage to adjust rates Ill have an idea too.

I am mostly interested in european rates, specifically UK, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Czech republic, Ukraine, Netherlands and (not really europe) Russia.

    Dear bw.burggraaf,

The answer to your question is: it depends.

As I'm sure you understand, there are lots of variables involved.
Additionally, and because your question is similar to one asked
just a few days ago, you might find the posts here of interest.

    I hope this helps.

The question can't be answered. There are too many variables and the range is too great. In US$ it could range from less than $50/hour to more than $500/hour. What good is knowing the range?

This is just one more example of how useless it can be to look at the average ... or even the range.

I'm afraid you'll have to come at this some other way.

well, through averages ill know what countries are more attractive than others. If I would know that the range in russia is 30-125 usd but in uk its 100-175 ill know something about the market.

I fully appreciate the complexity. Also,I would settle for big four consultancy rates in these countries, or even incomé by index... its just to get a feeling of dífferences in markets.

    Dear bw.burggraaf,

On re-reading your intitial question there's one thing that stands out and it's the sentence "The consultancy will be at the higher end of the price spectrum."

The point is that although the consultancy might be charging an arm and a leg, will what it's delivering be of that calibre? Will clients get what they're paying for?

I think before you can ask for answers, you've got to redefine your question.

I hope this helps, although I tend to agree with Michael that in reality, your questions can't be answered. At least, not until you've given more thought to your question.

    Beste Burggraaf,

From the experience of me and my academic colleagues around the globe, our rate ranges from $ 400 to $ 1000 an hour. Given the above responses, this would qualify as 'the high end of the market'. I agree with Gary that this requires demonstrated quality and value to the company. 'Rasputin for hire' is a useful book to help consultants frame first the money they will be making/saving for the client, after which the fee sounds extremely reasonable.
The fact that most of us are on continued retainers suggests these rates are worth it to the clients....
