I agree with holm that it depends heavily upon the audience because, primarily because two of the major costs are recruitment and incentive. However, I would expect the cost that holm quotes to be on the low side. Typically groups run approximately $7500-$10000 per group (depending upon several variables). Also, I am assuming by "small group", you mean 8-10 people (the usual size of a group). Even if you have names and phone numbers, and therefore don't need to go and buy sample, $5000 is probably on the low side.

You may want to consider an online focus group or a bulletin board style group, in addition to in-person groups. They each have their own advantages. If you decide to go the online/bulletin board way, two companies with whom we have had success, in terms of recruitment and software platforms, are ITracks and 20/20 Research. Additionally, if you go this route you should find a moderator experienced this approach. If you decide to go with in-person groups, you should go with someone who is experienced with that method.
