For purposes of trageting a direct mail piece most accurately who in a typical household opens or reviews the mail that comes in daily - the male of female in the household?

When you purchase the list, typically you may include gender as a select. If you are getting a list with one contact per household, it could be M or F. Have the list broker include that data, so you can be sure to address them properly. I've used InfoUSA in the past, and i think they will add gender at no extra charge (don't quote me on that).

    Celia,
I open NONE of my wife's mail and she opens none of mine. I think it would depend on the product.

If it's generic, it's generally the bill payer in the house.

    Dear cbassols,

    It depends.

Is every household male and female? What about same sex couples? What about single people? What about elderly parents living with adult children? Or who is the piece addressed to? What's the gender of your list? All male? All female? Mr. and Mrs.? No information on gender at all? First initial?

Is this a bought list? One you've put together? A rented list? Segmented? And if it's segmented, segmented how?

I know this might not help but I hope it gives you something with which to widen your question.

It is likely that there is also variation by other elements, such as graphic, copy, and topic/subject matter/category. If you're looking for something specific, your best bet is to conduct a small study that applies to your unique situation.

as stated above, it really does depend on the product and how it is addressed. If you want to be very generic (which many times may not get opened, but rather thrown away) the female statistically will open the mail, or at least sort it out appropriately.
