Spinal Immobilization Backboard Annual Sales

What is the market size in the USA for spinal immobilization backboards- i.e. the number of spinal backboards sold, and the number of backboards in current circulation. Also the number of trauma patients that are transported on these backboards daily.

Thanks for your response. I reviewed all of these sites, and still haven't been able to extract the needed data.

Another approach may be to extrapolate the number of backboards in use from the number of ambulances and fire rescue vehicles in circulation.

On average two boards are stored per rescue vehicle.

Hi Rob,

It appears you have thoroughly investigated external resources... in this case I believe you are right to extrapolate from known numbers - that is what we encourage our MBA students to do! However, the market for backboards may be higher than you calculate: if two boards are stored per rescue vehicle, organizations must keep some in reserve in case they need to be replaced - the cost of not having one when needed is much larger than the cost of keeping some in inventory! Hospitals should be similar in this regard - so a few interviews with their purchasing department on how often they need to replace backboards and which % of the ones in use they keep as a back-up should help

Hi Rob,

You may also want to take into account market potential - if you can extrapolate the number of rescue vehicles and are able to get some trended data on this over the last few years, you might be able to construct a model that predicts the incremental number over the next few years. Therefore, total in circulation + total projected over the next 1-2 years = total market size. Not sure what your purpose is, but this calculation might make sense for you.
