Commentary On Surveys--

Posted by Anonymous on 25 Points
This is not a question but a comment on online surveys. It seems that every website you visit, they want consumers to join with a user id, password and to fill out a survey. From the consumer point of view, it gets to the point where it is down right harassment. Some survey questions are down right rude and there is no way you give a real answer to them. Additionally, they don't give you an option to decline to answer. So, how can they possibly accurately market to comsumers that they are forcing ficticious answers from? The net net, is hostile customers and inaccurate survey results.

I think I saw a question in there. "So, how can they possibly accurately market to comsumers that they are forcing ficticious answers from?"

I agree with you in that many use surveys under good advice, but poor implementation.

When I do use surveys, I tend to use them to confirm a demographic by asking a question that I assume will stimulate a response, thus ensuring I have the correct segmentation visiting the page or section of a web site.

But, you are right, they can be abused.

Technology has made it possible for every idiot and his brother/sister to become an expert at market research ... even if they don't have a clue how to structure a good survey.

And the same is true for design, layout, writing business and marketing plans, and probably a dozen other things. Just because a survey is easy to implement online, doesn't mean that everyone with survey software is a good researcher. And everyone with Freehand or Illustrator doesn't necessarily have good design sense.

Technology just fools us and gives us tools without training. It's like giving someone a hammer and a saw and telling them they can be a carpenter. The tools don't make the craftsman.

i just use www.bugmenot.com or the spoof plug-in for firefox to get around password protected sites that don't need a secure environment.

just a side note, it looks like a few people have tried to get into markertingprofs premium accounts with it.
